WIRE WOOL & LONG EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY NIGHT

Due to a last minute change, due to unforeseen circumstances, Castleford Camera Club hosted a spectacular Wire Wool & Long Exposure Night on the 08th April.

Wire wool photography is a captivating form of long-exposure photography that involves spinning ignited steel wool to create mesmerising light trails. This technique produces stunning images with swirling sparks and trails of light against a dark background, making it a favorite among photographers interested in experimental and creative photography.

Wire wool photography, also known as steel wool photography or spinning fire photography, involves using steel wool ignited with a lighter or battery to create showers of sparks while spinning it in a controlled manner. The long exposure of the camera captures the movement of the sparks, resulting in striking and dynamic images.

Safety Precautions:

  1. Safety glasses: Protect your eyes from sparks.
  2. Gloves: Prevent burns from handling the steel wool.
  3. Non-flammable clothing: Wear clothes made of natural fibers that are less likely to catch fire.
  4. Choose a safe location: Perform wire wool photography in open areas away from flammable materials and people.

Castleford camera Club members arrived at Xscape on an overcast night. Following a short walk, they engaged in a night of long exposure photography with wire wool and LED lights to produce some stunning images. (see below)  The night was finished off with some light trail photography around the roads of Xscape.

Conclusion: Wire wool and light trail photography is an exciting and creative technique that can yield stunning results with the right equipment, safety precautions, and execution. We experimented with different spinning techniques, locations, and camera settings to create unique and captivating images that showcase the beauty of light and motion.

  • Remember if trying this at home, always prioritise safety and respect your surroundings when practicing this exhilarating form of photography.

Thanks to Kieth, Bill, Joe and Lee for the stirling efforts hurling the wire wool and lights around!
